Turns out that the popularity of athleisure has harmed our environment, ruined denim, and killed fashion. What started off as an interesting shift in fashion history to jersey for sportswear in the 1910s and 1920s has now devolved into corporate cash grabs and way too much polyester and spandex. 🫠 (As a wearer of leggings and sweatpants, this was extremely difficult to make, so please know I am...

Just because something is made by a woman does not mean that thing has not been directly or indirectly influenced by misogyny / the patriarchy. Women are a product of their environment / conditioning and upbringing, like everyone else. Women in the last 1000 - 1500 years have been influenced by patriarchy. Direct and indirect influences of oppressive systems are still byproducts of said system. That’s the nature of systemic oppression, especially as it relates to and is compounded by time and thus history. Misogyny can exist even in the hearts of women. Thus, internalized misogyny… like internalised racism, internalised homophobia, internalised transphobia etc… the Margaret Atwood poem “Male Fantasies” speaks perfectly to this. “You are a woman with a man inside watching a woman. You are your own voyeur.”

I think we should bring back the hair jewellery - its not gross at all, i actually find it incredibly moving. Its bizarre but when you said 'funeral biscuits' i knew exactly what you meant despite never having been to a funeral with them or having heard of that custom. Makes me wonder if i came into contact with it as a child too young to consciously remember but it lodged deep down somewhere because it did feel familiar. As for the gloves - i wear day gloves regularly and my white kid gloves are the most practical, easiest to dress up or down and prone to getting dirty. If someone gave me a replacement in a goody-bag, even at a funeral - i would be very happy! I always need/can make use of white leather day gloves.

Washing internally for women prevents staining of underwear. This only requires water, not excessive douches. Normal excretions are normal. Smell only occurs when excretions sit with bacteria for a time. Herbs are quite effective, but require extensive knowledge. Let's hear it for witches! Herbalism is a lost art. We need to study this.

Didn't Egyptians shave their heads and wear wigs for this reason? Having lice is very uncomfortable. I can't imigine our ancestors accepting this. Herbs, probably known to old women could have cured them.

Just recently, I've learned to appreciate the art involved in fashion. Previously, I saw entitlement, classical, etc. I won't buy a garment without pockets. Old hippy here. Function and comfort are how I select my clothes. I'm learning a different point of view. Men's wear is more functional and sturdy. I love men's cargo shorts.

Do you really think that working is all that much better today? I have permanent health issues due to my previous employment and so do many many people (most?). Would you enjoy moving heavy furniture all day or delivering heavy packages all day long? Would you enjoy missing your children growing up or your aging relatives end of life due to travel or risk of spreading disease that could kill them? working 2 - 3 day shifts (I used to work 16 -18 hours per day every day at least)? exposed to the rain, snow, excessive heat and temps well below freezing? kidney injury due to dehydration? I have only had one job that was not some version of Hell, honestly, and that was a temporary one only lasting a few weeks sadly. Life is just hard and work is the extremely high price we pay to survive, today, yesterday, and all the days before.

"Red-heeled shoes" were a thing at the court of King Louis XIV and continued until the French Revolution to denote male-only royal favourites. As late 1830-1834 French Ambassador to London Prince Maurice Talleyrand sported red-heeled buckled shoes to formal functions at the English court and at his own Embassy. He powdered his long, luxuriant wavy blond hair from youth to the end of his 84 years. He only used white powder, but it heavily scented with amber (= ambergris-- a heavy, earthy scent). When wearing court dress, he favoured dark red, shades of plum, or blue embroidered velvet or satin coats with knee britches with white silk stockings, although he would wear fashionable trousers and cutaway coats and top hats for daily wear. Even in old age, he was elegantly slim and only slightly stooped; it was said he even limped gracefully (HIs nickname was "the lame devil," as he was a shark of a politician & negotiator) -- all his life he wore an iron brace on his right lower leg to correct a congenital club-foot.

I powder (white bentonite clay + cornstarch or arrowroot starch) my naturally fine, flyaway hair to make it thicke,r and find that the natural oil in my hair is sufficient to hold the powder satisfactorily without pomade. I have (and like) grey hair so love the natural pale colour; this makes my make-up more vivid, so I use paler colours; I really like the effect. To prevent hair loss, I comb well (with wide-tooth comb) and massage my scalp each night before I go to bed.

22:09 This explained this so beautifully! Thank you and your friend! And yes, a 14 inch waist is crazy small. She looked pretty active at the shows. She doesn’t seem to be unable to breathe. I wonder if she had ribs removed or if it really was just her mother keeping her cinched up to the size of a child 24-7? I do think she was a pretty woman. And I hope the African American gentleman just agreed to that silliness so he could visit Paris, where, no doubt, he had a grand time. It’s sad we don’t know what happened to him.✌️♥️

I kept thinking about this video, specifically your comment about how some technical fibers are just chemical versions of wool. I needed some clothing for fall/winter hiking, but new wool was way too expensive. I ended up going to the thrift store and buying some old 100% wool mens suits to "harvest" the cloth for new pants (or see if i could modify them to make what I need rather than buying new.) I'm a woman but men's clothes seem to have better cloth. Thanks for covering this topic. I've been thrifting natural fibers for years, but feeling a bit self conscious that my versions of things look funny sometimes. (Last year I wore a thrifted business style 100% silk blouse as a baselayer hiking. It was perfect. But hanging on a line outside my tent, it did stand out😂.)
